Do You Need Drawings Before Bespoke Joinery Is Made?
A bespoke piece of joinery has to work in the real space, not just look right in an initial conversation. That is why the design stage matters as much as the workshop stage. Before timber is cut, we use drawings and visual information to test the proposal against your room, your existing features and the way you intend to use it.

What happens before the drawing is produced?
The brief is turned into practical requirements
A request such as “built-in storage” or “a new staircase” is only the starting point. We need to understand what the item must do in daily use.
For fitted furniture, that may include the size of objects being stored, door clearances, shelf loading, lighting, sockets and access to services. For a kitchen, the position of appliances, work surfaces, plumbing routes and circulation space all affect the design. For a period property in Surbiton or Kingston upon Thames, the relationship with skirting boards, decorative ceiling trim, door and window trim, and uneven walls may be just as important as the internal layout.
This is where a measured survey, a detailed record of the room's dimensions, becomes valuable. Site dimensions are not always regular, particularly in older London properties. Walls can bow, floors can slope and corners may not be square. Recording those conditions early gives the design something real to respond to.
The design is tested against the room
The first useful drawing is not simply a polished picture. It should show how the proposed joinery relates to the opening, wall, ceiling, floor and nearby furniture.
Technical drawings help us examine dimensions, junctions and construction details. They can show the thickness of panels, the position of doors and drawers, the direction of opening and the way separate units meet. This is important where a design has to fit between existing features or where a small change in one dimension affects the whole composition.
A 3D visual or flat front view helps with a different set of decisions. It lets you judge proportions, sight lines and the overall balance of the piece. You can see whether tall cupboards feel too dominant, whether a media wall leaves enough visual space around the screen or whether a line of kitchen units sits comfortably within the room.
These views are not a substitute for technical information. They work alongside it. The visual answers, “Does this look right in the room?” The technical drawing answers, “Can this be made and fitted properly?”
What should you check before approving the design?
Approval should cover more than the general appearance. We recommend looking at the details that are difficult to alter once manufacture has started.
Check proportions and clearances
Look at the height of cupboards, the width of doors and the space needed to open them. Consider walkways, handles, seating, appliance access and cleaning. A design can appear balanced in isolation but become awkward when doors are open or several people are using the room.
For built-in furniture, check how the piece finishes at the walls and ceiling. Decide whether you want a tight fitted appearance or a more furniture-like design with visible gaps, base panels or deliberate lines between surfaces. Those choices affect both the appearance and the installation detail.
Check the parts you will touch and use
Review handle positions, drawer depths, shelf adjustment, hinges and the operating direction of doors. If a window, cupboard or staircase component is being matched to existing joinery, compare the proposed profile with the original rather than relying only on a general description.
Material samples are useful here. Timber grain, the direction of a thin wood covering, painted finishes and edge details can look very different across a large surface than they do in a small sample. Confirming the finish before manufacture gives you a clearer basis for the final decision.
Check how the design meets existing work
Bespoke joinery rarely sits in an empty shell. It may meet a wall, floor, ceiling, the inside edge of a window opening, a radiator, pipes or another item of furniture. Ask how those junctions will be resolved and which elements need to remain accessible.
This is particularly important during refurbishments and period property work. Preserving an existing feature may require the new work to be cut to follow the wall, set back or adjusted rather than simply installed as a standard rectangular unit.
Why approval is a proper project stage
Once a design has been approved, the workshop can manufacture to an agreed set of decisions rather than making assumptions. That reduces the risk of a unit being the wrong depth, a door opening into an obstruction or a finish being selected too late.
It also gives you a clear point at which to discuss practical compromises. A particular profile may need more room, a thicker material may improve durability but reduce internal storage, or a symmetrical layout may conflict with an existing opening. These are design decisions, not problems to hide until fitting day.
